Volcanoes gave it its shape.
Cabécar indigenous tribes gave it its magic.
A natural sanctuary in which our cacao grows, planted in the deep respect we have for its origin.
Founded by Jorge Rossi Chavarría in 1942 and located in Los Llanos de Bonilla in Siquirres, Limón, Costa Rica, Hacienda Dos Lagunas results of the union of El Sauce and Bonilla farms, which originally spanned over two thousand hectares. During the decades of the 60's and 70's a great social work and humanist vision of our founder was carried out through an extensive agricultural parceling which included approximately 80% of the original land. The hacienda reduced its extension to give rise to a large community of small landowners, as well as the formation of four villages with schools, churches, recreational facilities and community centers.
At present, the farm is under care of the third generation of the family, which with great pride, keeps alive the social spirit and environmental commitment of our grandfather and mentor.
Preserving our essence, we also pay tribute to our true ancestors, the Cabécar indigenous tribes, who inhabited these lands between 900 BC and 900 AC. Due to our proximity to Guayabo National Monument, a central site to the life and trade of the ancestral peoples of Costa Rica, as well as the abundance of essential resources like water, the volcanic surroundings of the Bonilla lagoons were an ideal place for the development of different indigenous groups.
Our soils of volcanic origin are perfect for fine cacao, hence the "terroir" which translates to unique flavor and aroma. Hacienda Dos Lagunas was awarded in the 2023 Cocoa of Excellence contest among the best in Costa Rica.
We have clones that have been specially selected for their organoleptic attributes of special flavors and aromas.
The design of Dos Lagunas´ regenerative system is inspired by the vast biodiversity that thrives in the native forests of the area. While touring the hacienda you can observe the integration of cacao trees with other plant species, which creates a diverse and balanced ecosystem.
From the moment the seed touches ground to final processing, we exclusively use organic products, mostly produced on-premise, consequently managing to reduce our dependence on third party providers.
We apply the principles of regenerative pasture farming, a methodology that proposes that cattle graze as they would naturally: in compact herds and in controlled time cycles, thus avoiding overgrazing and erosion of the soils.
Some of the advantages of our system:
Our pasture farming activity enriches the production of cacao, through the use the cattle´s excretes as a main component in the elaboration of our own organic fertilizer.
Two thirds of the total area are dedicated exclusively to conservation through the protection of forests, natural regeneration programs, and agroforestry systems; all within the framework of an agreement with FONAFIFO (National Fund for Forest Preservation) and under their supervision.
The hacienda strives to form and maintain biological corridors between forested areas and lagoons, hence promoting the development of flora and fauna. We will continue to increase the area dedicated to the natural regeneration of fragile and marginal areas like wetlands, lagoons, water springs, rivers and streams.
Preserving and recovering forests in the area is a vital part of our project and commitment to equilibrium.
Our regenerative agroforestry systems promote the symbiotic interaction of multiple animal and plant species in the same space, ensuring sustainability in addition to the constant enrichment of the soils through mixed farming.
All our processes are developed under the circular production model, turning waste into resources that can reintegrate with nature without contaminating it. As part of our commitment to the environment, we make sure not to use any chemicals in farming practices.
